Why Alien: Isolation is the Best Sci-Fi Horror Game

Why Alien: Isolation is the Best Sci-Fi Horror Game

If you believe  that horror games cannot get any worse than Resident Evil then you are wrong. There is nothing and I  mean nothing that can prepare you for the sheer terror of being chased around by a 8 foot  tall, acid drooling nightmare that has it in for you. Welcome to Alien:  Isolation, the game that even makes seasoned horror fans pee their pants.

But what makes Alien:  Isolation so enduring? Why do gamers still shout for more fear? And most importantly – why  is it important to play in the darkness with the help of the Alien Abduction Lamp?

 Let’s break it down. 👽🔥

The Legacy of  Alien: Isolation

Developed by Creative Assembly, the studio behind strategy games like Total  War, and launched in 2014 (yes, it’s been that long), Alien: Isolation is one of the worst ways to play through, one of the most terrifying  experiences in gaming history. Why? Because they understood the horror of the original  Alien movie (1979). Instead of giving us another generic action-shooter (cough  Aliens: Colonial Marines cough), they threw us into a slow burn, hide and seek  nightmare. The game is rather ugly in its retro futurism, and rather unpleasant in its  clanking, dead metallic feel.

It’s not a game about fighting back. It’s a game  about surviving.

> Pro Tip: The conditions below should be met when playing this game: In  the dark with headphones on, and just enough light from your Alien Abduction Lamp to  not get lost in the darkness. You might not even last until the first Xeno encounter.  😱

What makes Alien: Isolation so scary?

Of course, there  are many other games with jump scares and creepy monsters, but Alien: Isolation is  different. It doesn’t rely on cheap tricks, it psychologically strips you down.

 1. You Are Always Being Hunted

The Xenomorph isn’t scripted. It is  different from most horror games where enemies appear at certain times; this beast has an AI system that tracks  your movements and behaves differently according to your actions. It will know if you stay in lockers too  much, it will start checking them. It will note if you move a lot, it will cut you off.

TL;DR: The Xenomorph is smarter than you. Good luck. 👀

 2. The Atmosphere is Oppressive as Hell

Sevastopol space station is crumbling,  the lights are blinking and dangerously, and all the vents are potential paths to death. The sound  effects are amazing: You can hear the metal creaking, the distant screams, and the horrifying  hiss of the Xenomorph in your head.

Pro Tip: Dim the lights and use the Alien  Abduction Lamp as your only source of light. You may just feel a bit too much like you  are really there though.

3. You Are Completely Underpowered

You won’t be getting a huge  arsenal, like most survival horror games.

Guns? They are useless.

Combat? It’s suicidal.

The only good weapon? Running like you’re being chased by a madman.

At some  point, you’ll get the flamethrower to make the Xeno back off, but it only  gives you a few seconds. And good luck even finding the fuel for that. 😅

The  AI Xenomorph: Why You Can’t Hide Forever

If the Alien: Isolation didn’t  have a very intelligent enemy AI, it wouldn’t be scary. But the Xenomorph?  It’s almost sentient.

It can hear everything; it can hear your Motion Tracker screaming.

It learns your  hiding places and begins to search for them.

It chases after you dynamically which means that no two  chases are the same.

Pro Tip: If you want to scare yourself badly? Then try hard  mode. The Xeno becomes more hostile and resources become scarce. Enjoy your heart attacks, I  guess. 😬

The Perfect Alien-Themed Gaming Setup

If you are going to suffer through  Alien: Isolation, you might as well do it in style. Here is how to set up the  ULTIMATE sci-fi horror gaming experience:

1. Immersive Lighting

The perfect source of light  for your room is an Alien Abduction Lamp; it will help to create the atmosphere of the  Xenosphere.

Use smart bulbs to turn your room into a dark and creepy shelter, suitable for a  horror film.

2. High-Quality Sound

You need headphones; the ideal ones would be surround  sound so that you can hear the smallest drops, hisses, and steps.

If using speakers,  increase the bass. The Xenomorph should walk through your chest.

3. Hardcore Mode

Turn  off all the lights in the house.

Play with permadeath rules: If you die, then  you have to start from the beginning. (If you dare.)

Get your friend to watch you play.

Side effects may include extreme paranoia, insomnia, and xenophobia. 😨

Final  Verdict: Still the King of Sci-Fi Horror

Even after 10 years, Alien:  Isolation is the best sci-fi horror game. With its AI propelled terror, oppressive atmosphere and completely unpredictable  gameplay it is one of the best in the genre.

So, are you brave enough to try it  (again)? Just remember—

The Xenomorph is always watching. Always listening. It never stops  hunting. Always.

Get your Alien Abduction Lamp, turn the lights low, and get  ready to play what might be one of the scariest video games ever made. You’re going  to need it. A lot.
