When Was The First UFO Sighting on Earth?

Hello,  Earthlings, and fellow lovers of the cosmos!

In this article, we are going back  in time and around the globe in order to trace the origins of those odd objects that have been flying  around and confusing people for centuries. So, put on your tinfoil hats, activate your truth seeking engines and let’s dive into the weirdness that is UFO sightings while soothing ourselves with our favourite  extraterrestrial inspired lamp.

The Dawn of the Unknown: The First UFO sighting- Kenneth Arnold in 1947

Our story starts on a clear day in 1947 when private pilot  Kenneth Arnold was flying over the state of Washington. He was going to discover a phenomenon which was to change  the way that people viewed the sky forever.

On that day, as Arnold was flying close to Mount  Rainier, he saw nine bright objects speeding towards earth in a manner that he had never experienced before. He said that they moved ‘like a saucer skipping on water’  thus coming up with the well-known term ‘flying saucer.’ This sighting was reported to the  media and made UFOs famous in the mass media, and therefore in the modern world. But was  Arnold’s sighting actually the first such encounter with unidentified flying objects? Not quite. Let’s go back  a bit further in time.

Ancient Aliens or Just a Case of Misidentified Meteors?

Although Arnold’s encounter was the first widespread UFO experience in current times,  objects flying in the sky have been a source of mystery for centuries. The myths and legends of  ancient civilizations also contain descriptions of some strange objects in the sky.

Consider, for example, the Tulli Papyrus, which is said to have been written in ancient Egypt and to describe  ‘fiery discs’ that floated in the air in 1440 BCE.

The Roman historian  Pliny the Elder also wrote about ‘sparkling shields’ that were said to be flying in the  sky while medieval documents told stories of how people were confused by celestials objects. Were these early  visits of extraterrestrials? Or were they just some piece of space junk or  meteors, comets, or other atmospheric phenomena? The truth, as they say, is out there.

The 1561 Celestial Battle of Nuremberg

If you look  even closer, the most significant UFO event in history took place on April 14, 1561  in Nuremberg, Germany. Reports of a celestial battle between spheres, crosses and  cylindrical objects was reported. It was such a spectacular event that it was depicted by Hans Glaser,  an artist, in a woodcut, which immortalized the combat between these reported flying objects.

It was suggested that  this happened due to mass hysteria or an illusion created by the sun’s reflection on ice crystals. The  Nuremburg sighting, however, is one of the most historic encounters with unidentified aerial objects to  UFO enthusiasts.

From Saucers to  Smartphones: Analysis of UFOs in Pop Culture

Ever since Arnold’s ill-fated flight, UFOs  have assumed a prominent position in our cultural lexicon. From  sci-fi classics like Close  Encounters of the Third Kind and Independence Day to the real-life governmental disclosures like the Pentagon’s declassified UFO videos, the interest of the human race in extraterrestrial  life has only been increasing. And let’s not forget the people who have spent their time and energy  studying UFO phenomena for the past four decades, equipped with telescopes, cameras, and a childlike  faith. They are a clear example of the fact that the spirit of exploration is still alive.
